New Zealand is generally safe and relaxed, so visitors usually just use normal common sense: keep valuables out of sight, lock cars and accommodation, and be especially careful in isolated areas, at beaches, and on hiking tracks where help may be far away. In towns and cities, petty theft is the main issue rather than serious crime, and locals are used to a low-key, trusting atmosphere, so visible overcaution or aggressive security behavior can feel out of place.
