Physical Touch Etiquette in New Zealand

Physical touch is usually kept fairly restrained in New Zealand, so a handshake is the safest greeting and casual hugging or back-slapping is generally reserved for friends and family who are already comfortable with it. Among Māori and in more informal settings, a warm embrace or the traditional hongi may be used, but it is best to wait for the other person to initiate anything more personal.
