Dress modestly, especially in villages, churches, and at formal gatherings: shoulders and knees should be covered, and men often wear a
tupenu while women commonly choose a long skirt or dress. On Sundays and for church, many Tongans dress very neatly and conservatively, and wearing a
ta'ovala over formal clothes is a respected sign of respect and occasion.
