Personal Space Etiquette in Mauritius

Mauritians are generally warm and sociable, so people may stand fairly close when talking, greet with a handshake or light cheek kiss among acquaintances, and touch an arm or shoulder to show friendliness. In crowded markets, buses, and family settings this closeness is normal, but in formal situations or with strangers it is best to keep a respectful distance until the other person becomes more relaxed.
