Meat is central to everyday hospitality in Mauritania, and when you are offered a meal it is polite to accept at least a small portion, especially of lamb or
camel, rather than refusing outright. In many homes and social gatherings, meat is served with rice or
couscous and eaten from a shared platter, with the right hand used for eating and the most honored guest often encouraged to take the best pieces first.
