Public life in El Salvador is still fairly traditional, so men are often expected to be assertive and women to be modest and family-oriented, especially in smaller towns and older households. In cities and among younger people these expectations are loosening, but travelers will still notice conservative attitudes about dress, flirting, and who speaks first in mixed-gender settings.
