Personal space is usually smaller in Algeria than in many Western countries, so people may stand close, touch an arm, or lean in while talking without meaning to be intrusive. In public and social settings, especially among men or within familiar circles, this closeness is normal, while women and strangers may keep a bit more distance depending on age, setting, and conservatism.
