Physical Touch Etiquette in Niger

Physical touch is usually kept modest in public, especially between men and women who are not close relatives, so handshakes are the safest greeting and lingering contact or public hugging can feel inappropriate. Among friends and family, same-sex greetings may be warmer and more tactile, but in many communities conservative Islamic and local customs still favor restraint, particularly in rural areas and around elders.
