Smoking is generally restricted to designated outdoor areas, and you should not smoke in indoor public places, on public transport, or near building entrances and children’s play areas. Australians are often quite direct about asking people not to smoke nearby, and in some states you may also see local rules for smoke-free beaches, parks, and outdoor dining areas.
